Rogue’s Sound Crane

The Sound Crane is a large-scale, custom-built instrument designed to explore the resonance, tonal harmonics, and vibrations of submerged objects. Constructed from timber and plyboard, this robust crane is capable of lifting and lowering heavy objects into water, capturing their unique sonic qualities through movement and interaction with the water.

At the front of the crane, I had a custom stainless steel bath made, specifically designed to hold objects as they are submerged and raised. A 250kg boat winch, securely attached to the rear of the crane, is guided through wheeled bearings to ensure smooth operation when raising or lowering objects. The crane’s frame also includes storage shelves and various mounts for additional equipment, offering flexibility during recording sessions.

Equipped with 8 heavy-duty wheels, this mobile crane can be easily transported to different locations, making it ideal for on-site sound recording. This project is a personal milestone, as it took considerable time and effort to construct. The crane has proven to be an invaluable tool, opening up endless possibilities for studying and recording the resonant sounds created by submerged objects.
